"Was Vic buying supplies in town today?" Jennie asked Brae later that evening. They'd retreated to the den after dinner. She was sitting on the carpet, her back resting against the sofa. They'd made hot chocolate with tiny marshmallows, and had raided the cookie jar and brought a plate of peanut butter cookies. Brae had built a fire, then settled in with her with nothing more than the glow from the flames to illuminate the room.

Dana and Phillip had gone out to a movie in town and were spending the night at his apartment, leaving them alone in the house.

"I don't know. Why?"

Jennie told him about their meeting that morning and how she'd felt.

"You think he had something to do with the hay bale falling?"

"Not really—okay, maybe."

"I know he's still angry with Tom and he's taking it out on you because Tom isn't around, but I honestly don't think he's the one who left you out on the cut-off to die. What could you possibly have that he'd want when you’ve been away for four years?"

She nibbled on her bottom lip. He couldn't stop himself from staring at her mouth, mesmerized by the way her teeth nipped at her lip, fantasizing about what those lips could do. What they had done in the past.

He scrambled to his feet, desperate to change the direction of his thoughts. He picked up the poker in the stand beside the fireplace and jabbed at the burning logs, giving himself time to regain his composure. Then he turned back and looked at Jennie. She was watching him, her hair falling in soft waves around her shoulders, a faint smile on her face. Her eyes sparkled in the firelight.

She'd changed her clothes when they’d gotten back to the ranch earlier, and now she was wearing a pink turtleneck sweater she told him she'd bought that morning. The color gave her skin a glow, the soft wool clinging to her curves.

God, he was tempted to grab her and kiss her, but he knew one kiss wouldn't be enough. One kiss had never been enough, and back when they were a couple one kiss almost always led more than kissing.

He had to stop thinking about it. "We could have gone to the movies with Dana and Phillip," he commented, glomming onto the first thing he could think of that would get his mind off how he’d like to spend the evening.

"You like chick flicks?" she asked, her brows arching.

The thought of watching two people making out on a screen wouldn’t be a good idea, but being alone with her, sitting beside her, taking in her fresh scent, was playing havoc with his senses anyway. In a theatre, in public, there was safety in numbers.

"Not really, but if you wanted to—"

"Somehow you strike me more as an action movie type."

Brae hooked the poker back on the stand where the fireplace tools were kept. "Busted."

"I'm quite happy to stay here. You don't have to entertain me. You don't know how much I appreciate all the help you and Dana have given me the past few days.
